How to double site visitors and turn more of them into customers

That's two questions in one. So let's treat them separately.

Firstly, how to double the number of people that come to our site.

There's a simple step you can take immediately to double your site visitors, but first here's the two ways to grow site visitors:

  • Get more people to know what value you provide on your site through marketing and advertising. Here you need to do a careful analysis of the return on investment of advertising via traditional means (magazines, newspaper, radio, billboards, tv etc) and online.

  • Get more people to find your site through the major search engines. This is achieved by making your pages more likely to be found by search engines and being treated as an authoritative site in the areas you want to be found under. This is called search engine optimisation.

Now, here's a tip to double traffic immediately.

Give everyone of your current site visitors a reason to pass on your site to at least one other friend or colleague. For instance, with one of our sites - a tea business, we sent out all customers an offer to give them a half-year supply of tea for FREE if they simply gave feedback on what they liked about the tea. This offer was to be given to people who's feedback was chosen for publication on the web site. And we asked them to pass this offer on to any other tea drinker they knew.

The cost to the company was negligible, because a half-year's supply of tea was only 500g worth of tea and this was only given to people who gave feedback worth publishing. It also ensured they hooked people on their tea for half a year. The word of mouth was great and it created a real buzz. In fact the e-mail just spread like wild fire… Traffic more than doubled. Then how do you convert more of them into customers?

Theoretically this is easy. You just have to give more people more of what they want and make them feel they have to buy or sign up now.
Putting this into practice, however, requires a bit of thought and work.
Essentially, once you have someone visiting your site, you need to immediately capture their attention with something they are likely to be in need of. This means you need to first identify the type of people coming to your site and then identify what these people need that you can immediately give them.

Headline

The next step is to then have an exciting headline that makes it very clear what value the reader will get on that page. The headline is critical to grab people's attention and lure get them to dive into the page.

Sales copy

When people decide to investigate what lies below the headline, you need to have killer sales copy. This means the content needs to:

  • Be exciting – keeps people reading

  • Be personal – makes the reader feel they are in a conversation with you

  • Create trust - builds a relationship with the reader because you talk about something the reader wants to know about and what you say makes sense to them so they agree with you

  • Highlight benefits – clearly identifies ‘what's in it for the reader’ and how it will make their lives easier and better

  • Remove objections to transact with you by addressing any possible objections

  • Create urgency and make them feel the need to act now

  • Leave people wanting more

Your copy needs to be easy to read and educate your reader. It doesn't have to be short. In fact research shows that the longer the sales copy the more effective it is, provided it is good copy.

Your copy should end with an offer that can't be refused by most people who have the need that made them read the copy in the first place. For instance, if you are selling software, give them a FREE trial version that they can pay for after they are convinced it solves their problem.

Simple sign up / order processing

Then you need to make sure that people are easily able to purchase or sign up whatever it is you are offering right away. If at any step of the way, they run into any difficulty, there's a good chance you will lose them for life. Make sure you clearly explain all costs they will incur and steps they need to take. Be completely transparent. Do not waste anyone's time.

Upsell

Once you have a customer ready to buy, you should upsell them to give them more value for less. You can do this by adding other items of value into the equation at prices that will make it an easy decision.
For instance if you are selling software, you can sell other packages or manuals or tutorials that will make your customers' lives even easier.

Repeat business

Finally you need to build ways to get existing customers to come back and buy more. This can be done by appropriately reaching for them and adding value to them in manner that doesn't invade their privacy or irritate them.

Affiliate programs and newsletters are one such way to get your existing customers to become bigger life-time customers. After all, as you know, it is much easier and cheaper to sell to an existing customer than to a potential new customer.
